MEGHAN LUCAS
YOGA INSTUCTOR / ADVENTURER / VETERAN
Meghan had been living out of home since she was 15. She graduated early, but grappled with addiction and couldn’t get on her feet. She reached a tipping point where she thought “I can’t do this anymore” and saw the military as a way out. It guaranteed a paycheck and stable living quarters, and would eventually pay for college.
She eventually found herself working as a helicopter electrician in Guam where the tropical, untamed environment finally made Meghan feel at home. Then she was deployed to Kuwait, she worked diligently and made herself irreplaceable, but prior to her deployment into Iraq she suffered a breakdown. A psychologist prescribed Prozac for the side effects of PTSD, but wouldn’t prescribe more than three-months of medication at a time, rendering her ‘un-deployable’ because she would be gone for anywhere between 6 and 18 months. In seeking help, she had lost her position and was medically discharged from the Navy after three years and three days of service.
Coming back to the States, Meghan floated for about a year before settling in Wyoming to complete a degree in International Studies through the GI bill. She started hiking, backpacking, trekking, eventually climbing and skiing, “I was finally in love with being alive.” She’s found Yoga and meditation have helped her to listen, and unlock her courage and resilience: “We were not made to be broken, we were made to be free.”
“WE WERE NOT MADE TO BE BROKEN, WE WERE MADE TO BE FREE.”
